Set up your display

Two things to do: connect it to your Wi-Fi, then link it to your account. The banner guides you through each step — all you have to do is read it.

Duration about 10 minutes Required a phone or a computer Have ready your Wi-Fi password
  1. Plug in the display

Connect the USB cable to a wall socket. The display starts up right away and scrolls its welcome message.

What you should see on the banner.

Leave it plugged in until the setup is complete.

  2. Connect it to your Wi-Fi

Until it knows your network, the display creates its own. Grab your phone:

    1. Open your phone's Wi-Fi settings.
    2. In the list of networks, choose SmartLedMessenger. It has no password.
    3. A page opens by itself. If nothing happens, open your browser and go to http://192.168.4.1.
    4. Tap « Configure WiFi ».
    5. Choose your usual network from the list, enter its password, then « Save ».

Your network isn't in the list? The display only works on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, the band used by all connected devices.

Many routers offer two networks, for example Livebox-1234 and Livebox-1234_5GHz. Choose the one without the 5GHz label.

You have three minutes to complete this step. After that, the display restarts and the SmartLedMessenger network reappears a few seconds later: simply start over, nothing is lost.

Once connected, the banner briefly shows its address on your network. Write it down, it may come in handy later.

Your address will be different. That's normal.
  3. Note the code shown

The display is online, but it doesn't yet know who it belongs to. So it scrolls a six-character code.

The code is different for every display.

The code never contains I, O, 0 or 1. These characters look too much alike on an LED banner, so they have been left out.

    If you think you see an O, it's a Q or a D. A 1 is a 7 or a J. An I is a J or a T.

  4. Activate it on the website

Go to the customer area. No account needed: it is created at this step.

    1. Open smartledmessenger.com/account.html.
    2. Find the box labelled « I've just received my display ».
    3. Enter the banner code and your email address.
    4. Tap « Activate my display ».

Write the code however you like: uppercase or lowercase, with or without spaces. k7m 4xp and K7M4XP work just as well.

    Activate my display

  5. Choose what it displays

You receive an email to choose your password. Once logged in, you decide everything: your message, the time, the date, the saint of the day, your town's weather, the news, the tides, the air quality…

An example of what your display can show.

Allow about a minute before your settings appear: the display checks the website every thirty seconds and waits for the current message to finish so as not to cut it off midway.

If something goes wrong

The SmartLedMessenger network doesn't appear

The display only offers it for three minutes after each start-up. It then restarts on its own and the network reappears: wait a minute and look again.

If nothing shows up, unplug and plug the display back in and look for the network within the following minute.

Is it already connected? Then it no longer creates its own network — that's normal, and it means step 2 is already done.

My Wi-Fi network isn't in the list

Almost always because it's a 5 GHz network, which the display can't see. Look for the twin network, without the 5GHz or 5G label in its name.

If your router shows only one name for both bands, the connection still works in the vast majority of cases.

The banner keeps asking for the Wi-Fi

The password entered isn't correct. Redo step 2 and check it: it's case-sensitive.

It's often on a label underneath your router, labelled "security key" or "Wi-Fi password".

« This code doesn't match any pending display »

The code is renewed regularly. If some time passed between reading it and entering it, read the banner again: it's showing a new one.

Also check the ambiguous characters — remember that a code never contains I, O, 0 or 1.

The banner still shows the code after activation

Give it a minute: it checks the website every thirty seconds and first finishes the current message.

After two minutes, check in your customer area that the display appears under "Your displays".

The banner is unreadable or shows nothing

Each display has its own page, reachable from your network. In a browser, open the address you noted in step 2, for example http://192.168.1.55. There you'll find its identifier, the brightness and the scrolling speed.

No longer know that address? It's in your router's interface, on the line of a device whose name starts with ESP.

I already have a Smart Led Messenger account

Enter the same email address at step 4: the display will join your existing account, without creating a second one.

You can also log in first, then enter the code in the "Your displays" box. The result is the same.

I want to move my display to someone else

In "Your displays", tap « Detach ». The display starts scrolling a code again, which the new owner just has to enter.

To change Wi-Fi, see the update procedure.
